MONT St MICHEL:

attractions near Montanel

Le Mont St Michel

The Abbey is a medieval monastery on an island set in a breathtaking bay shared by Brittany and Normandy. The monastery and surrounding town is impressively majestic and it is one of Christianity’s most important pilgrimage sites dating back to the early 8th century.

Mont St Michel is just a 20-minute drive from Montanel and is one of the most popular tourist destinations in France. A small island monastery surrounded by a walled town, it can be very busy during the day, but is a calm, and tranquil place to visit at night. You may even be lucky enough to hear the hauntingly beautiful sound of the choir upon entering the abbey.

The restaurant, La Mère Poulard, as you enter the main entrance, is famous for its omelettes. It  has been declared that the “omelette” origins were invented by Marie Poulard herself. It’s a long walk up perhaps 100 stairs to the abbey, so it is important to note that it is not easily accessible for those with mobility issues, for strollers or wheel chair users. Lining the steep cobblestone streets of the monastery are converted museums, restaurants, hotels and shops.

The holy island can be visited by car. Car parking charges vary seasonally. Once parked you can walk to Mont St Michel or use the free bus  service (navette) available daytime and throughout the evening.
